gchatfortunecookie is a webzine. We host snippets of Gchat conversations, which, when taken out of context, sound like fortune cookies. Think of us as an it-gets-better project for twentysomethings.
Who are you?
What is this?
We met in first year of college when everyone thought they were either going to go to law school or become the next UN Secretary General (Alex actually went down the law school path. He has been sitting shiva over the lost years since.).
Since then, we've each pursued various internships, graduate degrees, reporting assignments, wanderlusts and other adventures, usually in opposite parts of the world (Miranda is into papa Mao, May is an Arab wannabe). During these long stretches of time, to save us from hours of therapy and crushing long distance phone bills, we kept in touch through Gchat. These are excerpts from those conversations.
Where is this going?
Like our lives, we're not entirely sure. It could evolve into a coffee table or a cooking podcast with Internet celebrity guests. Ideally, the future will involve a line of tote bags.
When did this project start?
Our very first Gchat was about Season 1 of Gossip Girl. We exchanged 15,281 lines of chat before realizing our conversations sounded uncannily like fortune cookies. Semi-truisms about being a twentysomething in this world.
Why should I read it?
The number of times the following words appear in our combined Gchat histories:
lost: 62
unemployed: 52
employed: 25
funemployment: 1
sex: 225
depression: 70
procrastinate: 16 (surprisingly low!)
schizophrenia: 7
If you can relate to any one of these words, if you feel angst about your future, if you feel lost negotiating the world, if you want some company as you navigate the howling void that surrounds us all, then this is the place for you.
